The tree is up, and your ten-year-old would rather hang something the two of you made than one more ornament from the store. You've got card stock, white glue and a free Saturday afternoon.
Six paper stars that stand up in three dimensions, with true-size templates to print, cut, fold and hang on a tree, in a window or on a gift. A 17-page PDF for a parent, grandparent or teacher who wants to make ornaments with a child instead of buying more.
Inside: a start-here page with the six stars at a glance, what you need and how to read the lines (page 2); for each star one page with the steps and three small pictures and one page with the full-size template (pages 3 to 14); a hanging guide with a thread loop and three ways to hang (page 15); six flat star gift tags (page 16); and twelve "Made by, Year, For" labels for the back of each star (page 17).
The stars: a Crossed Star (two flat six-point stars that slot together, no glue), a Four-Spike Star, a Puffed Five-Point Star, a Puffed Six-Point Star, a Six-Spike Star and an Eight-Spike Star. Each is marked Easy, Medium or Harder. On the folded stars every glue tab and the edge it joins carry the same letter. The steps say who does what: a grown-up cuts out the pieces and scores the fold lines; the child folds, glues and hangs. Finished stars are about 3.4 to 4 inches across. Print on US Letter or A4 at 100%, on card stock.
Each folded template was checked on a computer model: folded on screen from its printed numbers to see that every tab meets its edge and that the finished star has the stated number of points.
