Your eight-year-old has outgrown word searches and wants to try a real crossword, but the one in the newspaper is far too hard. You want something with numbered squares and easy clues for the next long car ride.
Real crosswords for kids ages 8 to 10: numbered squares, Across and Down clues, and the answer key at the back. Not word searches, and not word lists in disguise.
17 easy crossword puzzles, 9 x 9 grids, one to a page. Pencil, a long car ride, and a book that takes a child through one puzzle at a time.
What makes them real crosswords:
- Every white square is crossed both ways, by an Across word and a Down word.
- Every grid looks the same turned upside down, the way newspaper grids do.
- No word is shorter than three letters.
- The answer key at the back was read back from the finished PDF, letter by letter, and equals every solved grid.
- No answer and no clue appears twice in the book (416 clues, 416 different answers), and no puzzle has a word beside its own plural, past tense, -ing form, -er form or irregular form (such as see and seen, eat and ate, go and gone).
- No two puzzles have the same block pattern, even turned or flipped. Grid shapes vary: 5 different shapes in the book, so the pages do not all look alike. On average 38% of the squares are black (from 31% in the lightest puzzle to 43% in the darkest).
Easy words: words a nine-year-old is unlikely to know (81 of them) were taken out of this level, along with grammar clues built on them. A few harder words are still in (3 of them, such as larks, orbs and parlor); no two of those cross each other, so each one is crossed only by words that are not on the hard list. A few clues in each puzzle are grammar clues such as "More than one cat" or "Past tense of walk": 53 of the 416 clues in the book, and never more than 4 in one puzzle.
Animals, second: each puzzle has at least 2 answers about animals, their babies, homes and sounds (2.6 a puzzle on average, 45 different ones in the book); the rest of the answers are everyday words.
Inside (26 pages, US Letter, margins that also fit A4):
- A how-to page written for kids, with a tiny puzzle to try first (its answer is with the answers at the back)
- 17 puzzles, each on its own page: the grid at the top, the Across and Down clues underneath
- Answers at the back, four small solved grids to a page
- A page for grown-ups about how the book was made
Type you can read easily: clues are set at 13 point, the numbers in the squares at 8.5 point, and the squares are 0.40 inches across or bigger.
How the clues were made: the clue bank was written with AI help, then checked clue by clue against sources, and given a second read by the clue writer; nobody else reviewed it. Clues that say something about animals, space or places (8 in this book) were checked against pages from National Geographic Kids, NOAA and NASA. Where two answers of the same length could fit a clue, the answer is settled by crossing letters.
